Credit History Problem: Make Amex fix or contact the credit companies?

fix credit history
Taylor asked:

Last year I applied for an Amex card. I forget why, but I ended up calling them about my application (I think it was to confirm I calculated my income the way they wanted me to). A week later I get two credit cards (oddly enough at different interest rates and credit limits). I called and said there is a mistake I only wanted 1 Amex card. They said our bad, and I threw the second on in the trash without ever doing the confirmation process that opens an account (I’ve never received any account statements or anything); but now according to my credit history I have two Amex cards open (one just says it has had no activity on it for a year). What do I do? Call Amex and say this is your fault fix it? Call the credit companies and say that account was never actually opened?

I would leave it open, it lowers your Debt to Income Ratio, especially if you aren’t using it! If you close it you will see your credit score go down.

Contact Amex to close the one you don’t want. “Activation” is just a card security procedure; the account is open until your close it.

I would just call Amex and ask them to close out the card you don’t want. It will not affect your credit if there’s no activity on it. For more information on credit check out :

There is no point in contacting the credit companies; they will first want to know if it is identity theft, which it is not. Given that it’s not identity theft and the card is open in your name, they cannot remove it from your report; the card must be closed through American Express. Although you did not do the confirmation process to fully activate the account, the account is still open, and only you/American Express can close the account. Although it is an error, it is not an error in the reporting by the credit bureaus. Make sure that when you contact American Express to close the card you clearly state that you want the account fully closed and you do NOT want any sort of replacement card. They may require you send them something in writing (via mail or fax) to close the card; if you do send them something, again, make sure to clearly state you want the account fully closed as it never should have been opened in the first place.
