How can I get out of debt quick?

Get Out Of Debt
Brandon asked:

Ok, I am about 4,000 dollars in debt right now and I need help getting out of it immediately. It’s not all credit card debt, one debt is a overdraft reserve line ($1,800) one is a missed payment that lead to cancellation of AT&T phone lines with multiple lines ($950) by USBANK checking account, an unauthorized transaction went through, then when i filed a report during the 45 day process of investigation the overdrawing grew to ($1,000) and my Chase Checking got overdrawn by my auto insurance ($250).

Now this is the part that sucks, I am an 18 year old college student with a crappy paying part time job, who can’t find a new or second job (lives in Colorado where NOBODY is hiring). If I don’t get my credit on track soon then I won’t be able to apply for school loans next year and won’t be able to go to school :( . Please this is where I need help, now more than ever.

Oh my monthly income is only $300 dollars at best (like i said crappy paying job) so really any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

There isn’t an immediate way to get out of debt. The best way is to borrow some money from someone that won’t charge (or at least not a lot) interest like a friend of family member and then pay that off as you are able to. Other than that you’ll just have to take it one step at a time. Pay off each of your debts in the order of what they are costing you in the long run (high interest ones first) so you end up paying as little as possible. For your income try and cut back on unnecessary expenses as much as possible so you have as much extra money as possible.

Sorry dude the best thing to do is to put school off untill you can afford it. You can get back in if you drop out 2 years or less

Try to apply for financial aid. Borrow some money from relatives. Try and pay $4000 as soon as possible and save up money and return it back a.s.a.p. If possible, you can try to get loans, but it is risky b/c you’re paying back in a bigger amount.

Kenya Hear Me Says:

No unauthorized transaction went through, you just didn’t manage your finances properly.
Same with the missed payment.
And your Chase Checking didn’t get overdrawn by your auto insurance, you blew it by not having the money available to pay the auto insurance.
Stop blaming the banks and everyone else.
Get a better job. Pay your bills.
Learn to live within your means, even if it means losing your internet service & cable TV for awhile.
Check out books from the library, it’s free and entertaining.

It took you a while to get into this mess and it will take you awhile to get out. You will need to work a second job for awhile. If you have to open the phone book and start calling construction companies, furniture shops etc. and ask if they need a part time helper, cleaner or whatever. Then contact your creditors and let them know you are going to be making minimum payments and try to get them all paid off. GET RID off the cards. It may not sound like it now but you are learning a very valuable lesson. It will help you improve your life skills. OK here is the one and true thing that will work. Get down on your knees, fold your hands, close your eyes and beg God for a miracle. You will be shocked at how he will help you out of this mess. THEN ALWAYS give him proper credit for what others will call a coincidence. Take and Good Luck.

You can’t get out of that sort of debt IMMEDIATELY. Not unless you borrow off a friend or relative.

The next quickest way to pay it off would be to take part in a clinical trial (for healthy volunteers not sick people)

I have taken part in six and never had any side effects worth mentioning.

They usually pay between $1000 and $6000 depending on how long the study takes and exactly what it involves. For a $6000 study you would be confined to the clinical research unit for probably about 20 to 25 days, they pay for and cook your food, there will be cable tv probably on a big screen and other stuff you can use like PS3’s

Google ‘clinical trials for healthy volunteers’

It sounds like you’ve made poor financial decisions so trying to get out of debt overnight will only add to the list of bad decision making. Stop. Take a deep breath and realze what you can do with your $300 a month income not what you want to do with it. You will probably not be able to afford school right now unless you apply for grants, loans, etc but repaying your school debt is going to complicate your debt down the line because you can’t even file bankruptcy on student loans. What this means is that you’ll get out of school with a really impressive diploma and around $40,000 or more of debt… and still have a $300 a month income. It’s time to live within your means. As for your immediate financial trouble, it will only compound if you don’t address it. You’ll have to look into getting help from family or friends but remember you only have $300 a month to repay $4,000 which will take you a very long time even at 0% interest. I don’t agree that nobody is hiring in Colorado but assuming that’s true, maybe you should consider a move to another state and another college??? There’s absolutely no reason that you can’t start up your own business (wash windows, sell on Ebay, recycle aluminum cans, or whatever) to bring in some more money. You can’t live on $300 a month forever and without a plan, that’s exactly what you are facing. Start today to change your tomorrow!!!

Try to get some babysister job in your area or cleaning job, waiter – that all pay on daily basis. Or may be you can get some income…….

Simple solution sell your car and use the proceeds to pay down debt are there any other items you can sell that you own. Its very clear if your car insurance payment bounced you simply can’t afford to own a car so live within your means as a broke college student catch the bus. Stop spending money that you do not have which explains the overdraft. Last I checked most banks who use Visa and Mastercard have a zero percent liability for unathorized charges its a matter of disputing the unauthorized items and having YOUR MONEY placed back into your account. That’s a no brainer which will eat up most of this balance. Also collect money from everyone who was on your AT&T account for the early termination fee of there cell phone line on your account. I’m sure there were other people as there would have been no need to have “multiple accounts” for a cell phone. I was like yourself at 18 and as a result of being irresponsible my credit score took a big hit. Which I am slowly recovering from almost five years later. You need to grow up and own up to your obilgations I learned very quickly how to manage a check book and credit etc… but like yourself it costed me quite a bit of money and many days broke no parties, shopping or getting my hair and nails done for a while. But it taught me a lesson and I am very responsible now I pay all of my bills on time and never overdraw my accounts anymore.

Short of bankruptcy, which $4,000 does not qualify for, there is exactly one way to get out of debt, fast or slow. You have to spend less than you make and use the difference to pay the debt. There are exactly 2 sides to the equation: Income and outgo.

Any amounts related to the unauthorized transaction, including fees that would not have accrued had the transaction never happened, should disappear when the bank completes the investigation.

You can address the income by looking for a better job. I used to make $1000/month part time delivering pizza. $300/month is not even 10 hours at Federal minimum wage.

You can address the outgo buy DUMPING every conceivable experience. If you are not using Internet access included in your tuition are free at the library, get off the Internet, you can’t afford it. If you EVER eat at a restaurant, STOP, you don’t have the money. If you have a cell phone, if better be a prepaid phone you ONLY use to call 911. Better yet, use one WITHOUT service, it will still work for 911. Have I made my point yet? You officially have NO LIFE until you are out of debt.

David M Says:

Reduce spending and increase income. You can do both by putting school on the back burner. Less money going out to pay for school and more coming in by getting a full time job that will be allowed by the less time in school. And you cam leave Colorado for a place where employment opportunities are better. Go back to school when you get your financial house in order. Good luck.

David Says:

To get out of debt quickly you just pay it all off. I know of no other legal way.

Maybe you can sell your car and catch the bus for a while? Move to a a place where you can get a job and get a job then pay your bills.

For an 18 years old with a crappy job you sure have some stuff though, what with the car, car insurance, credit card, *multiple* lines phone line.. and who knows what else.. it might sound condescending but you messed it all up on your own and since you are an adult, now you deal with it.
Good luck Einstein.

Wrenching Monkey Says:

If you just get $300 a month, getting a $250 insurance wasn’t a very smart move and getting AT&T phone lines with multiple lines was.. ahem not that smart either.
What to say.. it is a tought world out there, some go ahead, some stay behind.. BUT we are all worthy, don’t you forget it.

Robert Says:

There’s NEVER a quick way. Money is your friend. I would honestly turn to some ventures online, or start up your own business. Why work for someone else? The money is in entrepreneurship. Get out there, stop being a slave to the system, and make some $$$ :)
