small debt that i didnt know of and it is killing my credit history. Can i fix it? HELP?

Hello,

I moved to another province(im in canada) in 2005(DEC). I had asked the power(electricity) company to shut down the electricity before moving. I even called to confirmed if it was done and it wasent.

June 2007, I discovered the power was shut down late due to no payment and i had an unpaid electricity balance of 200$!!! and another small bill of 89$. I want to pay off these immediately but I want to make sure that my credit history clears up! I have no other debts. I got the information when i applied for a loan out of the blue.

I know that in 2005 and 2006 my credit history was excellent. But now my credit is an E. the worst there is….how can i fix this????

pay the debt, then ask the company to give you a letter of satisfaction. this will enable you to clear your history.

Find out if the Utility company still has the account or if they handed it over to a collection agency. You don’t want to pay at the utiity company if the collection agency has the account because it would never show up on your credit report correctly,

Once you find out who actually has the account, pay the entire amount and request a letter stating that the entire amount has been paid. Follow up every two weeks until it shows up on your credit report. It does take time to have it taken off the report but well worth the extra effort on your part.
