meg234 asked:

I am a social worker- have $60,000 in debt and wont pay it off for 29 more years. Every 2 years the payment increases. I am not wanting go buy a home or travel the world- just need some help on how I can pay this off so I can afford gas and groceries- and as a social worker, I know I make too much for food stamps or any public assistance. Are there any programs for social workers out there like nurses or teachers? Is there anything? Anyone who has a ton of money who wants to donate to a worthy cause ;)

Your debt you borrowed it you pay it. Get a weekend job and put the extra toward principle. Or get a better paying job to begin with

Yeah me too! I used to be a teacher, now a stay at home mom (by force, not choice, so no assumptions please). I’d like to pay off my loan. It’s on hold right now. You can put yours on hold if you just can’t financially afford it right now – and you’re actually realistically trying. Just renew it if it expires in like 6 months if you’re not ready then. I’ve got a similar amount of loans to pay off too. I feel like it’s a chain attached to my foot or a yoke around my neck – I’m a slave to the government for this loan forever. I have to pay for about 20 years before they’ll agree it let it go. Try making an agreement to pay a certain affordable amount each month – and know that you’re going to have to pay it for a long time, but maybe take a break if you can’t afford it.

Well Doll Welcome to the real world.

If you want to pay it off early start making payments on the principal as well as the regular payments.

For instance if you have a 30 year loan on $60,000.00 at 8.5% interest. Your payments will be approximately $461.35 But if you could pay an additional $100 per month you can cut off at least 5 years 3 mos of the loan. Every time you have some extra cash, put it on the principal for the loan. Send extra principal payments in a separate check clearly marked to be applied to principal of the loan.

The student loan program is wonderful. However I don’t think most students realize how much they are actually borrowing over the long term of their education. So it’s a surprise to them when the payments start of how much they owe and how long they will have to pay on it!
