Talking my friend out of buying a puppy?

How to get out of debt
Smarties! asked:

My best friend, who is 18, CANNOT afford a puppy, yet she’s in the process of buying a $600 papi/pomeranian. She has a ferret and a kitten (which she’s had for two weeks, and hasn’t taken to the vet yet). Her first month into owning an apartment (which allows animals) and she’s already $150 short on rent. She CANNOT afford this puppy, but she wants it, and will literally put herself in debt over it. I refuse to lend her money (I’m currently living at home, saving for college this September). How can I get her to back out of buying this puppy she’s “so in love with…it was love at first sight, and I HAD to have her.”? It’s not worth going into debt over…plus she can’t afford vet bills either.

Take her to a shelter and ask the people who work there to tell your friend how those dogs got there. I’m sure a lot of those dog’s stories began just like the dog your friend wants.

Tell her your concerns

Ask her if she REALLY loves that puppy. Tell her it’s selfish to pull a fragile life into her situation. What would happen if the puppy gets sick? What about food? What about supplies? Puppies have NEEDS. If she really loved that puppy, she’d leave it out of her messy situation.

Well if she really loves the dog, she wouldn’t buy it because a dog needs room to run around and a lot of space but if she lives in an apartment, it wont have room! How would SHE feel all bunched up in a tiny space and with other animals? So again, if she loves the dog she’ll do what’s best for it. And what is she gonna do when the puppy’s sick? What about resources? What about toys? What about tags? What about the shots and everything? The puppy needs a good home with an owner that can afford and love it. Plus puppies are a lot of work! Their like taking care of a baby! Tell her this and I’m SURE she won’t buy it…

You have to get straight to the point, not just “you will go into debt”. You need to be more along the lines of “LOOK, If you get that puppy, then your gonna go poor! Do you understand that? NO MONEY! NONE! You can’t afford it!” Get up in her face…. I know it is mean, but if it stops her from loosing her money it should be worth it…

Has she thought that maybe it wouldn’t be a good idea having an energetic new puppy ( that would be a LOT of work to look after) with the kitten? They might not get along. It’d be better if she went to an animal shelter because she might find another loveable pup and the people there could tell her whether it’d be an appropriate pet. And it’s more affordable. She should work out how much it would all cost ( the puppy, food, toys, vet bills ) and realise she shouldn’t be spending money on a new puppy right now when she has other things to pay off!

Great idea Mittens!!!!!!!
Sadly, you will probably not be able to dissuade her. Speak your piece and let it go, she has to make this mistake on her own. Hopefully the animals wont suffer because of it. She does realize the kitten and the puppy will need to be spayed or neutered right? As well as boosters, licenses, flea and heartworm prevention, quality food, litter, toys and God forbid an emergency happens!

well i would tell her the pros and cons of buying a puppy at that price, what if she gets the pup and the pup catches Provo and dies days later, then she is out of 600 dollars and got a dead pup.she can go to shelters and human society and find one a lot less than 600 dollars. good luck into changing her mind

I agree with the first response! Take this girl to the shelter, show her how many cute little dogs are sitting there, and get the stories of how the dogs landed there. If that’s not enough, have them talk to her about how many of those cute little dogs are killed each year! If she has a heart underneath her impulsiveness, that will get through.

I guess you just need to MYOB. Your friend is an adult.
